How Much Does a Snowboard Weigh?

The weight of a snowboard is related to what type of materials it is made out of, alongside its length and width. Knowing the weight of your board can be important for any rider who has preferences or is counting kilos.

I’m an avid snowboarder who has been riding for decades. I have plenty of experience with many different gear and equipment items related to the sport and have a good idea of what various boards weigh.

In this post, I’ll provide some information to help you figure out the weight of your snowboard, as well as tell you why that’s important to know.

Get out the scale, and let’s get started.

Quick Answer

There are two different ways to think about this question—the board’s weight on its own or its weight with bindings mounted on it.

Most boards will weigh between 4-9 pounds on their own, and bindings will add another 2-3 pounds.

There is a wide range here because of the many different sizes of boards available and the materials they are constructed out of.

Factors that Determine How Much a Board Weighs

Different models of boards will have different weights. Different sizes of the same model will also have different weights. If you want to know the weight of a particular board, you should keep both considerations in mind.

Longer boards will weigh more than shorter boards. That’s because there is more material used in the construction of longer boards. There is less total material used in shorter boards, and that keeps the weight down.

The type of material used in the construction of a board will also directly relate to how much it weighs. Common materials used in the construction of a snowboard include wood, metal, fiberglass, and plastic.

Most boards are a combination of all of the materials I just mentioned. Heavier boards will have more wood and metal in their construction, while lighter boards generally have more synthetic materials like fiberglass and plastic.

Why Does the Weight of a Snowboard Matter?

If you have specific preferences for a snowboard, the weight might be a deciding factor in what board you choose. Different weights can have different performance attributes when they are on the snow.

Some people like lighter boards because they can slide faster or are easier to maneuver in the air. For freestyle and park styles, a lighter board can be ideal. Heavier boards are generally more stable and are good for freeride and all-mountain types of riding.

The average snowboarder can’t really tell a difference of a few pounds in their board. The truth is most people want to know the weight of their board for purposes of shipping and travel.

If you want to ship a board as a gift or catch up with it later on a snowboarding trip, its weight will determine how much it costs to get there. Heavier boards will cost more to ship because shipping companies charge by weight.

Weight is also a factor when flying with your snowboarding gear because most airlines have a baggage weight limit. Generally, this is 50 pounds. While your board obviously won’t weigh more than that, a fully packed snowboard bag can.

How to Figure Out the Weight of a Snowboard

It can be challenging to put a snowboard on a standard scale to measure its weight accurately. You can try to hold it carefully on top of a bathroom scale, and I would recommend putting a piece of cloth down to prevent it from sliding.

The scale measurement will probably be slightly lighter than the actual weight because holding the board up takes some weight off.

You can also get the specs from the manufacturer of your snowboard and bindings. Make sure you get the information for the length of board you have and the size of bindings. You can then add the two figures together to your total weight.

FAQs

Here are a few quick answers to some common questions relating to the weight of a snowboard.

Once you figure out how much your snowboard weighs, be sure to write the number down so you can use it in the future if you need to for any shipping or travel needs. You don’t always need to know its weight, but this is a helpful thing to know.
